Columbia’s Art History and Archaeology is hosting an event to launch the publication of Detroit-Moscow-Detroit: An Architecture for Industrialization,1917–1945, edited by Claire Zimmerman, Christina Crawford and the late Jean Louis Cohen.

Christina E. Crawford is an architectural and urban historian, a trained architect, and Masse-Martin NEH Professor of Art History at Emory University. Her research focuses on the transnational exchange of ideas about housing and urban form in the twentieth century. She is the author of the prize-winning Spatial Revolution: Architecture and Planning in the Early Soviet Union (Cornell UP, 2022). Christina’s new research, funded by a Getty/ACLS Fellowship in the History of Art and a Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts research and development grant explores interwar exchanges of housing expertise between the US and Europe, using Atlanta as a primary node. “Black Community Building: New Deal Programmatic Advocacy at Atlanta’s University Homes,” in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, is the first publication to emerge from this research. She received her PhD and MArch from Harvard University, and her BA from Yale University.

Claire Zimmerman joined the Daniels Faculty at the University of Toronto in summer 2023. She recently completed Albert Kahn Inc.: Architecture, Labor, and Industry (MIT Press, 2024). Other publication projects include the co-edited Architecture against Democracy: Histories of the Nationalist International (with Reinhold Martin, Minnesota 2024), Grey Room 71 (The Costs of Architecture, co-edited with L. Allais and Z. Çelik Alexander in 2018) focused on building costs and architectural history, and “Migration, Briefly Arrested,” in the Canadian Centre for Architecture web journal. “The Anti-Photograph,” appeared in Modern Management Methods (ed. C. Blanchfield and F. Lotfi-Jam for Columbia Books on Architecture and the City, 2019), and “Built Environment” in The Art Institute of Chicago Field Guide to Photography and Media (A. Byrd and E. Siegel, 2023).
